The aim of Future Work, Future Communities is to create a blueprint that supports companies and governments across Australia better manage structural economic change. It identifies the key learnings from the closure of the Australian automotive sector. We recognise that many drivers of the global economy in the 21st Century have the potential to usher in considerable change at the national, regional and local level. This includes the arrival of disruptive technologies, new business models, the adoption of Industry 4.0 and the potential impact of machine learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Specifically, this study
- Identifies the longer-term employment and health outcomes of workers (Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and supply chain) affected by the automotive closure and the impact of the investment by OEMs and governments in transition support for workers.
- Examines the predictors of a successful transition to work. It will analyse the social, health and emotional wellbeing outcomes associated with employment change over the longer-term. It considers the pathways that lead to positive change, and the ways in which governments and firms can best support this outcome.
- Considers areas of employment growth and the changing nature of work. It seeks to understand the intergenerational impacts of industry restructuring on individual families, neighbourhoods and communities and sets out to document how best to strengthen individual and community resilience in the face of ongoing structural change.
