Description	The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) follows the development of up to 1,759 Indigenous children and their families across urban, regional and remote Australia. It is one of the largest longitudinal studies of Indigenous people worldwide. LSIC aims to improve understanding of the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities to inform better policy and program development. The study collects information about child and parent health, childhood education, family relationships, culture and Community, housing, life stressors, parental education, parenting, employment and income, attitudes and aspirations. It includes two groups of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children who were aged 6 to 24 months (B cohort) and 3.5-5 years (K cohort) when the study began in 2008. Data is primarily collected via annual face-to-face interviews with Indigenous interviewers.

Series	Footprints in Time: Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children: Overview The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) follows the development of up to 1,759 Indigenous children and their families across urban, regional and remote Australia. The study provides a data resource that can be drawn on by government, researchers, service providers, parents and communities. It is one of the largest longitudinal studies of Indigenous people worldwide. Purpose of the study LSIC aims to improve understanding of the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities to inform better policy and program development. Key research questions 2020 to 2025 The key research questions, formulated under the guidance of the Indigenous majority LSIC Steering Committee and updated by that Committee are: What do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people need to grow up strong? What helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people to stay on track or become healthier, more positive and strong? What is the importance of family, extended family and community in adolescence and emerging adulthood? How can services and other types of support make a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people? How do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people transition into and through adulthood? What does it mean to be a young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander growing up in the 21st century?

Universe	Indigenous children aged from 6 months to 2 years (Baby cohort, or B cohort) and from 3 years 6 months to 5 years (Child cohort, or K cohort) in Wave 1, recruited from eleven sites chosen, in part, to cover the range of socioeconomic and community environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children live and where relationships with Indigenous communities had been developed. See LSIC Data User Guide 4.4 for details of sites.

Frequency	Annual
Sampling Procedure	Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children born between December 2003 and November 2004 (K cohort) or between December 2006 and November 2007 (B cohort) are the sample units in the Study. The majority of families in the Study were recruited using addresses provided by Centrelink and Medicare Australia. Other informal means of contact such as word of mouth, local knowledge and study promotion were also used to supplement the number of children in the Study. In practice, the K cohort consists of children born in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the B cohort consists of children born in 2006, 2007 and 2008. See Table 4.1 of the LSIC Data User Guide for the ages of each cohort throughout the years of the Study.
Collection Mode	The majority of data is collected through face-to-face interview. Teachers Principals and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Workers fill out a self-complete questionnaire form (web - or paper-based).

Actions to Minimize Losses	Contact is maintained with study families between waves by sending birthday cards, LSIC newsletters annual calendars and participant publications. These processes have resulted in some families contacting the DSS to update their contact information.
Control Operations	Australian Data Archive performs basic control operations before dissemination.
Response Rate	The wave-on-wave response rate ranged from 85.9 per cent in Wave 2 to 86.0 per cent in Wave 12 but dropped to 81.0 per cent for Wave 14. See LSIC Data User Guide Table 5.2 for more information.
