Description	The Australian Youth Survey (AYS) is a longitudinal survey program based on annual interviews with a cohort of young people aged 16-19 in 1989, with a new sample of 16 year olds added each year from 1990-1994. From 1995, no further additions were made to the sample and interviews were conducted by telephone rather than face-to-face. The survey aims mainly at providing data on the dynamics of the youth labour market, and in particular to address questions which are not readily covered with available sources of cross-sectional data. Labour market topics include detailed work history, job search behaviour, job training and experience with the Commonwealth Employment Service. Other topics related to the main labour market theme include secondary schooling and retention to Year 12, career advice, post-secondary education and qualifications, transition from school/study to work, health, housing and financial conditions. Basic demographic variables include age, sex, marital status, size of household, country of birth, racial origin, parental education and occupation, religion, income, and area of residence.

Social Science and Humanities Metadata

Universe	Australian population, excluding those in sparsely populated areas, aged 16-19 years in 1989 supplemented by the 16 year old population in each year from 1990 to 1994.
Time Method	Longitudinal/panel/cohort study
Sampling Procedure	stratified, two-stage probability sample. The AYS 1989 sample comprised 700 Census Collection Districts (CD's), from each of which 10 persons aged 15-19 years in September 1989 were selected to give approximately 7000 people in that age group. Those persons aged 16-19 years formed the 1989 sample with the 15 year olds interviewed one year later in 1990. Samples of 16 year olds added in 1991-94 were identified from school-based samples of 14 year olds two years prior to their AYS interview. A sample of 56 schools was selected for each year with probability proportional to the number of 14 year old students, from which 25 students were selected for inclusion in the AYS two years later, giving a target sample of 1400 16 year olds each year.
