Description	Journeys Home: A Longitudinal Study of Factors Affecting Housing Stability was a national survey of Australians who were either homeless or at high risk of becoming homeless. Data collection commenced in September 2011 with a further five waves of data collected approximately six months apart. Journeys Home was funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA), and run by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research at The University of Melbourne. Roy Morgan Research (RMR) was sub-contracted to undertake the fieldwork. It was designed as a tool for enabling research that would improve understanding of the pathways into and out of homelessness in Australia and the consequences of homelessness for long-term outcomes. Three different data releases are available, depending on your research requirements and location. These releases are General, Restricted, and International. In the General and International releases some variables (such as location, industry and debt) are confidentialised. The International release also limits some income related variables.

Universe	Centrelink customers aged 15 years or older in receipt of any income support payments at any time during the 28-day period prior to 27 May 2011 that were flagged as vulnerable to homelessness.

Collector Training	All interviewers are required to attend a two-day project specific training session prior the survey. In addition, wave 1 interviewers working in areas with a high proportion of Indigenous sample participated in a half-day Indigenous training workshop led by an Indigenous Australian Culture consultant.
Frequency	Every six months
Sampling Procedure	Stratified random sampling. The sampling unit is the individual, selected from a population of Centerlink income support customers identified by Centerlink as either homeless or at risk of being so (as defined by their Homelessness Indicator service delivery tool). This sample design allows for identification of three sub-samples: homeless, at risk of homelessness, and otherwise vulnerable to homelessness. The population scope was initially established as all Centrelink customers aged 15 years or older in receipt of any income support payments at any time during the 28-day period prior to 27 May 2011. This definition gives a total of 27,017 persons flagged as ‘homeless’ and15,319 persons flagged as ‘at risk’ of homelessness. The research team identified a further 95,755 customers not already flagged by Centreline based on a wide range of demographic characteristics, classifying those individuals as vulnerable to homelessness. To reduced costs, participants were sampled from 739 clusters were formed based on geo-coded address and postcode information. The number of clusters included was set to 36, and these were stratified into eight metropolitan or regional centres. Within each strata, clusters were randomly selected with a probability proportional to their size. Individuals were then randomly selected from each of the three sub-groups in each cluster.

Characteristics of Data Collection Situation	A major problem confronting the study was that the contact information provided for a substantial proportion of the sample was inaccurate, out of date, or missing. Interviews took longer than anticipated on average for a range of reasons. Interview situations were difficult to control, with 19% involving the presence of another adult.
Actions to Minimize Losses	Interviewers and sample members are supported by a telephone support group. A set of contact protocols was followed (e.g., interviewers made up to three face-to-face contact attempts). All sample members are offered a $40 incentive each time they agree to be interviewed.
Control Operations	Interviewers noted whether respondents appeared to have difficulty providing responses.
Weighting	Weights were generated to account for the unequal probability of inclusion into the final responding sample. Three types of weight are provided in the data set: • Design weight ─ adjusts for the differential probability of selection of the clusters and the three groups within each cluster (‘homeless’, ‘at risk’, and ‘vulnerable’). • Response weight ─ adjusts for the differential probability of response. • Population weight ─ adjusts for design and response factors. Details (including formulae) are provided in the technical report documents.
Response Rate	61.9% (in wave 1)
Other Forms of Data Appraisal	Non-response bias was tested across a range of demographic factors. For the most part sample exclusions did not markedly affect the composition of the sample. However, Indigenous persons were more likely excluded, as were ex-offenders and those with a history of frequently changing address.
