Description	The study aimed to investigate the political attitudes of New Zealand voters with regard to both the 1981 general election and the wider context of general New Zealand politics. The survey was designed to provide data for comparative research with Australia. Topics investigated were voting behaviour; party identification; past voting behaviour; interest in politics; ideological self-placement; satisfaction with government and politics; thermometer ratings of leaders, parties and local candidates; attitude to political leaders; membership of and activity within political parties; likes/dislikes about the major political parties; knowledge of locally elected MP; and election issues. Background variables included age, sex, parents' party preferences, own education, occupation, marital status, religion and religiosity, birthplace, self-ranking as to social class, and income.

Universe	Persons eligible to vote in New Zealand from households within selected predominantly urban electorates of the 5 regions of Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Palmerston North or Wellington
Time Method	One-time cross-sectional study
Sampling Procedure	Area-cluster sample The sampling procedure consists of first obtaining starting addresses by drawing names at random from the electoral rolls within the selected electorates of the five regions. Each address is the "start point" for attempting five interviews by random selection of the eligible voters from every third house around the block to the left from the start point (that is, with the interviewer's left side to the front of the houses). If a start point would be repeated or crossed before making the necessary five contacts, the interviewer will cross to the house opposite and interview on the other side of the block, going the same way round (moving around the block with left side to the front of houses). An interview is attempted at every third house from the start point. Each flat or apartment counts as a house (I.e. a double home-unit with two flats counts as two house; a block of four flats counts as four houses, etc.). If a dwelling contains no eligible voters normally residing there (as determined by speaking to the residents), it does not count as one of the five contacts; two dwellings are skipped and an interview is attempted at the next dwelling. If no one is home when the interviewer calls at a dwelling, the address is noted so that a call back can be made later. Interviewers ask to speak to the person, of the eligible voters, who last had a birthday. Substitutes are not acceptable; arrangements are made by contacting the person directly to set up an interview at a more convenient time. The interview is given up only after at least two unsuccessful call-backs. A record is kept on a log sheet of every contact and attempted interview. Table 1. Actions to Minimize Losses	Training sessions were conducted over a period of several days where interviewers were given instructions and generally familiarised with the questionnaire. Practice interviews were included in these sessions. A copy of "INSTRUCTIONS FOR INTERVIEWERS/CODERS" is included in the questionnaire section of this User's Guide.
