Description

The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) follows the development of around 1,700 Indigenous children and their families across urban, regional and remote Australia. It is one of the largest longitudinal studies of Indigenous people worldwide. LSIC aims to improve understanding of the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities to inform better policy and program development. The study collects information about parenting, family relationships, housing and neighbourhood, childhood education, child and parent health, parental education, employment and income, attitudes and aspirations, as well as culture and community. It includes two groups of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children who were aged 6 to 18 months (B cohort) and 3.5-5 years (K cohort) when the study began in 2008. Data is primarily collected via annual face-to-face interviews with Indigenous interviewers. Overview

The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) follows the development of around 1,700 Indigenous children and their families across urban, regional and remote Australia. The study provides a data resource that can be drawn on by government, researchers, service providers, parents and communities. It is one of the largest longitudinal studies of Indigenous people worldwide.

Purpose of the study

LSIC aims to improve understanding of the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities to inform better policy and program development.

Key research questions

The key research questions, formulated under the guidance of the LSIC Steering Committee, chaired by Professor Mick Dodson AM, are:

What do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children need to have the best start in life to grow up strong?
What helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children stay on track or become healthier, more positive and strong?
How are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children raised?
What is the importance of family, extended family and community in the early years of life and when growing up?

Universe

Indigenous children aged from 6 months to 2 years (Baby cohort, or B cohort) and from 3 years 6 months to 5 years (Child cohort, or K cohort) in Wave 1, living in eleven sites chosen, in part, to cover the range of socioeconomic and community environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children live. See Data User Guide Section 4.3 for details of sites.

Sampling Procedure

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children born between December 2003 and November 2004 (K cohort) or between December 2006 and November 2007 (B cohort) are the sample units in the Study. The majority of families in the Study were recruited using addresses provided by Centrelink and Medicare Australia. Other informal means of contact such as word of mouth, local knowledge and study promotion were also used to supplement the number of children in the Study. In practice, the K cohort consists of children born in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the B cohort consists of children born in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Table 4.1 shows the ages of each cohort throughout the Study. See Section 4.3 of the LSIC User Guide for additional information.

Collection Mode

The majority of data is collected through face-to-face interview. Teachers fill out a self-complete questionnaire form (web- or paper-based).

Actions to Minimize Losses

Contact is maintained with study families between waves by sending birthday cards, annual calendars and participant publications. These processes have resulted in some families contacting the DSS to update their contact information.

The wave-on-wave response rate ranges from 81.9 per cent in Wave 4 to 89.0 per cent in Wave 9.
