Description	The project used an online survey of large national samples to provide a detailed picture of the Australian teacher and school leader workforces, and to gather information to assist in future planning. The survey ran from August to December 2010. The survey was structured around four populations: Primary Teachers; Secondary Teachers; Primary Leaders; and Secondary Leaders. ‘Leaders’ were defined as Principals, Deputy/Vice Principals, and their equivalents in the different school systems. The design meant that all eligible teachers in Australia had an approximately equal probability of selection. Final survey responses were received from 4,599 primary teachers (final response rate 34%), 10,876 secondary teachers (32%), 741 primary leaders (44%) and 838 secondary leaders (39%). The project was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in collaboration with a representative Advisory Committee. The study is similar in scope to the "Staff in Australia's Schools 2007" survey (ADA studies 01153-01156) that was conducted by ACER and the Australian College of Educators on behalf of the former Australian Government Department of Education, Science and training (DEST). Both the SiAS surveys are similar in scope to the 1999 survey "Teachers in Australian Schools" that was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and conducted by the Australian College of Educators (ACE).

Series	Staff in Australia's Schools: The Staff in Australia's Schools project, commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Education and undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research in collaboration with the Australia College of Educators, gathered information from secondary and primary school teachers and leaders across the country. It aimed to address key gaps in the data available to characterise the teaching profession to support workforce planning. The reports produced through the SIAS project provide a wide range of comprehensive data and advice on a number of aspects relating to teacher and school leader workforce issues, such as attraction and retention of teachers, staff shortages and professional learning.

Actions to Minimize Losses	Throughout the survey, ACER provided contact information and assistance via a freecall 1800 number, the SiAS email address, and the SiAS website, which included plain language responses to frequently asked questions and a link to the report from the 2006-07 SiAS survey. As part of the strategy to maximise survey participation and response, ACER liaised with Project Advisory Committee members and designated liaison officers provided by the majority of system authorities. Strategies to increase participation at the school level were varied. Throughout the survey adminstration period there was an on-going process of school and staff contact, follow-up of non-respondents, and drawing of replacement schools where original schools declined to participate or no response was received within a reasonable period. Email correspondence was used initially, supplemented by mass postal contact with both schools and individual participants. For additional details, see p.7-9 of the SiAS Main report (in Related Materials).
Weighting	Weights were calculated for both the teacher and leader surveys to account for: - Differences in the probability of selection of the respondent's school - Non-response at the teacher and school levels - Post-stratification adjustments to reflect the population totals The details of the sample weighting are included in Appendix 4 of the SiAS Main report (in Related Materials).
Cleaning Operations	The data were checked by the archive for missing variable and value labels, out of range values and wild codes, logical inconsistencies, and confidentiality.
Response Rate	34 percent (Primary teachers), 32 percent (Secondary teachers), 44 percent (Primary leaders), 39 percent (Secondary leaders) See SiAS Main report p.9 onwards for details of response rates (in Related Materials).
