Custom Dataset Terms — the following Custom Dataset Terms have been defined for this dataset.

Conditions of Use

I acknowledge that:

1. Use of the material is restricted to use for analytical purposes and that this means that I can only use the material to produce information of an analytical nature.

Examples of such uses are:
(a) the manipulation of data to produce means, correlations or other descriptive summary measures;
(b) the estimation of population characteristics from sample data;
(c) the use of data as input to mathematical models and for other types of analyses (e.g. factor analysis); and
(d) to provide graphical and pictorial representation of characteristics of the population or sub-sets of the population.

2. The material is not to be used for any non-analytical purposes, or for commercial or financial gain, without the express written permission of the Australian Data Archive.

Examples of non-analytical purposes are:
(a) transmitting or allowing access to the data in part or whole to any other person / Department / Organisation not a party to this undertaking; and
(b) attempting to match unit record data in whole or in part with any other information for the purposes of attempting to identify individuals.

3. Outputs (such as statistics, tables and graphs) obtained from analysis of these data may be further disseminated provided that I:
(a) acknowledge both the original depositors and the Australian Data Archive: ownership of the Data remains at all times and without exception vested in the Australian Government, and all researchers must acknowledge the ownership of the data by including the following acknowledgement into any publication or presentation that includes ALSA data:

We wish to thank the participants in the Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing, who have given their time over many years, and without whom the present study would not have been possible. The ALSA was supported by grants from the South Australian Health Commission, the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund, the US National Institute on Aging (Grant No. AG 08523–02), the Office for the Ageing (SA), Elderly Citizens Homes (SA), The National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC 229922), the Premiers Science Research Fund (SA) and the Australian Research Council (DP0879152; DP130100428). The authors gratefully acknowledge the work of the project team at the Flinders Centre for Ageing Studies, Flinders University who carried out the ALSA and provided data for this paper.

(b) acknowledge another archive where the data file is made available through the Australian Data Archive by another archive; and
(c) declare that those who carried out the original analysis and collection of the data bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of it.

4. Use of the material is solely at my risk and I indemnify the Australian Data Archive and its host institution, The Australian National University.

5. The Australian Data Archive and its host institution, The Australian National University, shall not be held liable for any breach of this undertaking.

6. The Australian Data Archive and its host institution, The Australian National University, shall not be held responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the material supplied.

7. The depositor may be informed (by the archive) of use being made of the data, in order to comment on that use and make contact with colleagues of similar interests.

8. All manuscripts based in whole or in part on these data should:
(a) identify the data and original investigators by using the recommended bibliographic reference to the data file; the ALSA dataset should be cited as:
Luszcz, M A.; Windsor, T D,; Edwards, P E.; Scott, J E T., 2019, “Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing, Waves 1-13 (1992-2014)”, doi: 10.70146/IVUGEH, ADA Dataverse, V1.
(b) acknowledge the Australian Data Archive and, where the data are made available through the Australian Data Archive by another archive, acknowledge that archive;
(c) declare that those who carried out the original analysis and collection of the data bear no responsibility for the further analysis or interpretation of them.

9. Use of the material is solely at the user's risk. The depositor, The Australian National University and the Australian Data Archive shall not be held responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the material supplied.

Research outputs
a) Research outputs must comply with any relevant institutional and NHMRC guidelines regarding publications or conference presentations.
b) All research output that utilises ALSA data must include the acknowledgement and citation.
c) An electronic copy of all accepted manuscripts or details of confirmed conference presentations are to be provided to the ALSA.

In order to assemble essential information about archival resources and to facilitate the exchange of information about users’ research activities, individuals are required to email ADA (ada@anu.edu.au) with the bibliographic details and, where available, online links to any published work (including journal articles, books or book chapters, conference presentations, theses or any other publications or outputs) based wholly or in part on the material.

Data Access and Use
a) Data only to be used for the research work detailed in the attached proposal according to any conditions specified by the ALSA. The lead investigator must submit a written amendment must be submitted if there are major changes in the scope/focus/analytical approach of the approved project.
b) All researchers/staff requiring access to the ALSA data have been named on this application. Only those named on this application are permitted to access the data. The lead investigator must advise the study in writing if additional persons require access to the data. The lead investigator is responsible for ensuring only authorised persons access the data.
c) Researchers acknowledge and agree that the data may be used by other researchers for similar and different projects.

Data Management and Storage
a) All researchers/staff must ensure that all data remain confidential and secure in accordance with NHMRC guidelines outlined in the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, available via www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines-publications/r39.
b) Data received must be stored on a password protected electronic database and is only accessible by researchers/staff listed on this application. Any copies must also be similarly stored.
c) Upon completion of the project, a copy of the data sets used (including any new or calculated variables) must be sent to the ALSA.
