Description	In this omnibus survey, topics investigated were dwelling and household characteristics; occurrence of disability in household members; employment history and conditions; life satisfaction; attitudes to and knowledge and personal experience of cancer; opinions on political leaders, the world economy, ACT self-government, and marijuana and its legalisation. Voting intentions in a federal election and the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, including patent medicines, were also examined. The drug questions were asked using a randomised response technique. Background variables are age, sex, marital status, birthplace, and residence in Australia for the workforce data, and educational level and income for the individual data.

Time Method	One-time cross-sectional study - partial replication
Sampling Procedure	systematic random sample A 1 in 100 systematic random sample of block and section references was selected from a Rates File supplied by the Department of the Capital Territory. This yielded a sample of 664 addresses distributed uniformly over the defined suburbs of Canberra, which were divided up between a field force of 26 interviewers. During the fieldwork period, it was found that 28 addresses were vacant land, 15 were vacant private dwellings, 3 were non-private dwellings, 3 were diplomatic residences and 2 were occupied entirely by persons who were visiting Canberra for a period of less than six months. All of these were classified as ineligible addresses and excluded from further consideration. A further 9 addresses were also excluded, one being the home of a member of the Centre, two having been chosen in the ABS Labour Force Survey Sample, and six which had been in the sample for the previous Canberra Population Survey (March 1978). This left 604 addresses. At 18 of these, no contact was made with any adult occupant, although the interviewer had determined that the dwelling was occupied. At a further 58 addresses, contact was made but an interview was refused. Thus the final sample is based on responses obtained at 528 private addresses in the defined suburbs of Canberra. Table 1 summarises the above details. Table 1. Members of the household are listed in order, starting with the head of the household, then the spouse (if there is one), followed by the remaining members of the household in descending age order. Each dwelling is allocated a number indicating its position in the sample selection, in this survey between 1 and 664, and depending on whether this is odd or even, household members taking the odd or even positions in the household listing are selected for individual interviews. Generally, only individuals aged 18 years and over were considered, but in this survey some questions were asked of selected 15-17 year olds also. On average, this selection method will give a 50% sample of eligible adults in responding households. The 528 responding dwellings contained a total of 1715 persons, of which 514 were aged 17 years or less. Of the remaining 1201 persons aged 15 years and over, 584 (48.6%) were selected for inclusion in the individuals sample (617 not being selected). Table 2 compares the age-sex distribution of selected and non-selected persons. Table 2.
