Description	The Canberra and Queanbeyan survey of health and well-being in later life aimed to determine the prevalence of depressive symptoms, depressive disorders, cognitive impairment and dementia in older Australians. Data was collected on men and women over 70 years of age living in the community and in aged care institutions. The Draft ICD-10 Diagnostic Criteria were employed to gather data and were assessed as a tool for research and use by aged care workers. Data were collected on physical health, social support, personality, mental activity and use of services.

Universe	The population sampled was all persons aged 70 years or more who were listed on the electoral role as living in Canberra, A.C.T. or the nearby town of Queanbeyan. A supplementary sample was also sought from nursing homes and hostels for the elederly within the same communities.
Time Method	Panel study
Sampling Procedure	Stratified random sample. 1. The population was drawn to yield approximately equal numbers of men and women. Males and females were then sampled at rates proportional to the numbers aged 70-74 years, 75-79 years and 80 years and over in the community. 2. From the nursing home and hostel sample, males and females were selected at a rate of one per three male residents, and one per six female residents to achieve approximately equal numbers of each sex. 3. To increase the number of very elderly, an extra group was selected which included all those aged 92 or more years who had not been selected in the community sample.

Actions to Minimize Losses	The initial approach to each potential respondent was by letter inviting participation in the research study of 'health and well-being in later life'. This was followed a few days later with a telephone call or visit by the interviewer. Up to 5 call-backs were made before a potential repondent was judged to be unavailable.
Weighting	The data are not weighted.
Response Rate	1. Community sample: 1,377 original sample, 432 refusals/non-contacts, final cases 945. 2. Nursing home sample: original sample , 43 refusals/non-contacts, final cases 100. 3. 92 years+ sample: 149 original sample, 59 refusals/non-contacts, final cases 90.
